Social Circle - Most of the time when parents take their kids fishing, they won't win anything - except any fish they catch - but one metro Atlanta organization is changing that.
For the 12th year, the Metro Atlanta Hawg Hunters Bass Club is holding the Casting Kids Fishing Derby at 9 a.m. July 26 at the Department of Natural Resources, 2065 Ga. Highway 278 in Social Circle.
Area children ages 8 to 13 years old and their parents are invited to attend the free event.
Anthony Shy, youth director for the nonprofit bass club, said no prior fishing experience is necessary.
"It's just a fun time for everybody," he said.
Also, the club will provide equipment and lunch for everyone in attendance.
"We ask the parents and kids not to bring any equipment," Shy said. "All equipment will be supplied, so they don't have to bring anything."
At the event, which is expected to last until about 1 p.m., kids will participate in a fishing derby contest, a casting contest and other events to win prizes like rods and reels, tackle boxes and Braves tickets.
Shy said the lake will be stocked with catfish and bass, and the event is catch and release fishing.
Parents will assist the fishermen.
"Sometimes (the parents) have more fun than the kids," Shy said. "They enjoy helping them handle the fish and sometimes assisting them when the fish are large. It's a lot of fun for the whole family."
Last year, the event served more than 200 kids, who enjoyed about a 95 percent catch rate, Shy said.
This year, the group will only be able to serve about 100 kids because they have only one lake to use, rather than two, like last year.
Shy asks anyone who plans to attend to register by calling him at 770-262-4905. He said although the event is limited in attendance this year, they don't plan to turn anyone away.
After the fishing is over for the day, the kids will be given school supplies from the club and then have a hot dog lunch.
