Man charged in 2004 case of molestation

COVINGTON - The Covington Police Department has arrested and charged a 22-year-old man with aggravated child molestation in connection with a 2004 incident, according to Sgt. Mike Tinsley.

Dolphus Dyer of 9137 Thrash St. was arrested Monday and taken to the Newton County Detention Center, where he is being held on charges of aggravated child molestation and enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Tinsley said the alleged incident took place when the victim was approximately 5 years old.

The detective said the youngster was recently talking to a relative about abstaining from sex until marriage when she told the woman about the alleged incident which involved performing oral sex.

"The little girl had begun to feel bad about it," Tinsley said. "After looking into the allegations and speaking to the suspect, there was substantial evidence to support the arrest and charges of aggravated child molestation."

Tinsley said the only incident of molestation detectives had been made aware of took place at Citgo Quick and Shop Mart at 8109 Washington St., near the Flat Shoals Road intersection, which was involved in a 2005 sting of 14 gambling operations within the city.

"This is proof other things are going on at these gambling locations. It made me feel good to know we might have made a difference in a victim's life by shutting down that video room poker and preventing other crimes," Tinsley said.

Tinsley said victims of child molestation in Covington and Newton County are taken to an Atlanta Child Protection Center where they are examined by physicians and interviewed by highly-trained social workers. Counseling is made available to them through the Department of Family and Children's Services, as well as other agencies.
