PORTERDALE - For those who want to extend their Independence Day festivities into the weekend, the city of Porterdale offers a perfect opportunity. Porterdale will host its second annual Patriot's Day Celebration Saturday, July 5, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The celebration, which will be centered around the parking lot next to the restored Porterdale depot just off Broad Street, will offer something for old
and young alike, according to Better Hometown Manager Sandy Fowler.
Music will be offered throughout the afternoon, Fowler said, featuring local acts as well as Fiddlin' John Carson Productions and Cruisin' and the Oldies Band, which will headline the event starting at 7 p.m.
Fowler said there will be plenty of children's activities - including a rock climbing wall, a space walk, an inflatable slide and more - as well as food and craft vendors. Fowler said most of the activities will be offered free of charge, and there is no admission fee for the celebration itself. Local merchants are expected to be open for business during the afternoon, she said.
The celebration will culminate with the traditional fireworks display at dark. Fowler said spectators will be able to get a good view of the display from the depot parking lot as well as along the sidewalks and at the ball field on Broad Street.
Porterdale's Patriot's Day Celebration is sponsored by BB&T, the Porterdale Mill Lofts, and the city of Porterdale.
