SOCIAL CIRCLE - The Alcovy Tigers had nine of their wrestlers record top-four finishes in the Redskin Rumble at Social Circle High School, earning a second-place team finish in the 13-team tournament Saturday.
The Tigers had 141 points for second place, eight points behind Jackson County.
"We didn't have a 189 (pounder) or a 171. I feel that if we would've had them, we could've won it," Alcovy coach Mike Mostek said. "But our kids had a good showing for the lineup we had. I'm proud of our performance."
Newton finished fifth with 99 points, followed by Rockdale in sixth with 78 points.
Winning their weight class were Alcovy's Malachi Outlaw (160) and Adam Pollard (130); Newton's Corey Ware (119) and Ryan Mitchell (112); and Rockdale's Jake Morris (103).
"Corey Ware and Ryan Mitchell did an awesome job," said Newton coach Chris Andrews. "They went out there and really took it to everyone. Corey beat a two-time state placer (Jesse Williams from Social Circle) in the finals. If this is an indication, expect big things from Corey at state."
Rockdale's Morris was also honored with the Outstanding Wrestler Award.
"This is his first tournament championship, and for him to walk away with the Outstanding Wrestler award should be a good indicator to the type of finish he will have this season," Rockdale coach Craig Hargrove said. "It was a great showing for our team. Due to injury and family outings, we were only able to enter seven wrestlers in the tournament. Out of the seven, five placed and the other two were one match from placing."
Rockdale's Kafuba Donzon, who lost to Outlaw in the championship round, finished second at 160 pounds and Alcovy's Zack Watola, who lost to Mitchell, was runner-up at 112.
Also finishing second were Alcovy's William Ledford (215), Newton's Danny Mendoza (135) and Rockdale's Luis Ponce (125).
Placing third were Alcovy's Steven Williams (152) and Travis Knight (135) and Newton's Carl Collins (125).
Chalking up fourth-place finishes were Alcovy's Corey Reid (140) and David Jones (285), Newton's Ricki Moore (171) and Allen Amancio (215) and Rockdale's Aris Banks (119) and Ahmed Burton (145).
