Berkmar football players make commitments

Three Berkmar seniors have made college commitments, including wide receiver Isaiah Jupiter to Valdosta State, the defending NCAA Division II national champion.

Fellow Berkmar senior Richard Walker has committed to Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.), while Alex Brown has made a commitment to Union College (Ky.).

Dacula's Stewart to sign with Hiwassee softball

Dacula senior Dixie Lee Stewart has accepted a softball scholarship to Hiwassee College, a private, two-year college in Madisonville, Tenn. She will sign a letter of intent in a ceremony Feb. 1 at 2:30 p.m. at Dacula.

Stewart, the starting left fielder on the Falcons' Class AAAA North Sectional team as a senior, was Dacula's Silver Slugger this past season and was a Gwinnett Diamond Club All-County selection.

Tennis tournament will fund scholarship

The inaugural Jarrett Boston Tennis Tournament will be held Feb. 23 to fund a scholarship to honor the former Collins Hill athlete who passed away after a fight with cancer.

The revenue will provide the Jarrett Boston Memorial Scholarship to Georgia College and State University.

The event is $50 per participant and features three divisions - men at 9 a.m., women at 11:30 a.m. and just for fun at

2 p.m. The matches will be played on the Edgewater subdivision's courts.

GAC, Wesleyan reschedule hoops game for Feb. 9

The varsity basketball games between Greater Atlanta Christian and Wesleyan, postponed last weekend because of the weather, have been rescheduled for Feb. 9 at GAC. The varsity girls game is scheduled for 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 7:30.

Basketball showcase at Duluth called off

Weather postponed last Saturday's Peach State Battle of the Southeast II at Duluth and organizers now have canceled the high school basketball event for this season. They originally hoped to schedule the showcase for this Saturday, but scheduling difficulties and SAT testing made the rescheduling unfavorable.

North Clayton's Shockley resigns amid probe

ATLANTA - The father of Falcons quarterback and former Georgia star D.J. Shockley has resigned as North Clayton High School football coach after a school board investigation found he kept photos deemed inappropriate on a school computer, an Atlanta newspaper reported Wednesday.

The investigation - which centered on photos of an assistant principal in lingerie and sexually suggestive poses - was the third probe into misconduct against Donald Shockley in five years, according to school board records obtained by the newspaper under state public records law.

Clayton County School Board spokesman Charles White told the newspaper Wednesday that Shockley resigned Jan. 7. Shockley had been placed on administrative leave with pay on Dec. 14.

Shockley was head coach at North Clayton since 1994 and an employee in Clayton County schools for 23 years.

Atlanta's WNBA team unveils 'Dream' name

ATLANTA - Atlanta's new WNBA team will be called the Atlanta Dream.

The team, which debuts in May, also unveiled its logo and red and sky blue colors on Wednesday.

Team owner Ron Terwilliger said it was no coincidence the announcement came so soon after the city observed the annual holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.

'Atlanta is a city of dreamers and this week we have had time to reflect on what it means to dream and what can happen when you do,' Terwilliger said.

Rockies ink Tulowitzki

DENVER - Troy Tulowitzki went into spring training last season just hoping to secure a spot on the Colorado Rockies' roster.

That won't be a concern this season. Tulowitzki and the NL champions finalized a $31 million, six-year contract on Wednesday that includes a club option for the 2014 season.

'It's surreal,' Tulowitzki said. 'It's awesome.'
