COVINGTON - Newton County arson investigators are looking into a fire that occurred last week at a home on Capeton Court near the intersection of Willow Oak Way.
Firefighters responded to the residence just after 10 a.m. Tuesday and discovered smoke coming out the front of the house. According to Newton County Fire Chief Mike Satterfield, it was apparent that there had been forced entry into the house. "The door had been busted out and there were several points of origin of fire inside the home," he said. What exactly the perpetrators used to ignite the blazes is still under investigation, according to the fire chief. The fire did cause damage to several rooms within the house, but no one was at home at the time and no injuries were reported. Authorities ask anyone with information about the incident to call the Newton County Fire Service at 770-784-2116. Tips can be given to the NCFS anonymously at 678-625-5050 or through the Newton County Web site by visiting http://co.newton.ga.us and clicking on "NCFS arson tip line." Those who want a response from NCFS personnel should leave contact information. You may also call the state arson tip line at 800-282-5804. Rewards of up to $10,000 are offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of an arsonist. Joel Griffin can be reached at joel.griffin@newtoncitizen.com.More like this story
