Heritage, Salem collect sweeps in Saturday doubleheaders

CONYERS - Heritage and Salem, which square off tonight on the basketball court, both collected sweeps in Saturday doubleheaders.

Heritage rolled to a sweep of Spalding County, while Salem swept Mt. Zion-Jonesboro.

The Heritage boys moved to 12-5 on the season with a 57-52 win, while the Lady Patriots (12-4) collected a 44-33 win over the Lady Jaguars.

The Heritage boys had four players in double figures. Shakeem Mitchell and Juron Dobbs each had 15 points. Blake Craft scored 11 and Justin Jones chipped in 10. Jones also had 14 rebounds, while Dobbs snagged 11. Craft also dished out five assists. The Lady Patriots were led by Neicey Lewis' 17-point effort.

Heritage boys coach Ron Bradley said he was pleased with the way his team performed.

"We did pretty good. One of the things that we've done lately is improve on free-throw shooting, and that helps," Bradley said. "We went 13-for-21 to go 62 percent from the line, but the main thing is that our guards went 8-for-9 from the line. It was pretty encouraging."

Meanwhile, the Salem boys (7-8) earned a 59-50 win over Mt. Zion as Zach Roddenberry led the way with 15 points. Julius Giles added 12 points.

"We had a big surge defensively the last 10 minutes of the game. JoJo Smith and Jarrett Brown made some big steals down the stretch to lead the way," Salem boys coach Darren Wilkins said. "I thought we were sluggish at first but finally came around the last quarter."

The Salem girls (10-5) cruised to a 65-45 win in their game as Courtney Hurt exploded for 38 points. Hurt also had 17 rebounds and four assists. Rebecca Mitchell added 13 points, five steals and seven assists.

"We played a solid game offensively and defensively. We started the game a little sluggish with the 2 p.m. start after playing hard on Friday night," Salem girls coach Bill Roberts said. "We were only up two at the end of the first quarter and nine at the half. However, we picked up the intensity in the second half."

Salem and Heritage face-off tonight at Heritage. The girls game begins at 6 p.m. while the boys game is slated to begin at 7:30.

Also on Saturday, the Rockdale boys (8-6) dropped a 74-59 decision to visiting M.L. King. Freshman Kevin Ware paced the Bulldogs with 13.
