COVINGTON - If you'd like to take a trip to Monte Carlo without doling out thousands of dollars for airfare and hotel accommodations, here's your chance: Southern Heartland Arts Association Inc. is holding a fundraiser that will bring Monaco's crown jewel right here to Covington.
Called Monte Carlo for the Arts, the fundraiser will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at The Oaks Golf Club at 11240 Brown Bridge Road.
Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization's instructional fund, which pays for scholarships for local students seeking a career in the arts.
Last year the organization provided scholarships to two graduating seniors and one adult seeking continuing education in the arts, said Susan Wahl, assistant event coordinator for the fundraiser.
The fund also pays for rent of classrooms used for 18 ongoing art classes, including a free community paint party held on Tuesdays.
In addition, the Newton County School System has asked Southern Heartland to develop a mentoring program for students planning to attend the Governor's Honors Program in the arts.
"All of these programs that we do related to the education of the community come from this (fund)," Wahl said.
Monte Carlo for the Arts will feature games such as roulette, blackjack, Texas hold 'em and craps, though all the bets and winnings will be in fake money.
The money will be turned in at the end of the evening in exchange for raffle tickets, which players can enter in their choice of raffles for prizes, such as a football signed by Georgia Bulldogs Coach Mark Richt, tickets to an Atlanta Thrashers game and dinner for two and tickets to a show sponsored by the Arts Association in Newton County.
In addition, a silent auction featuring original artwork and a live auction featuring numerous items will be held.
Included in the items up for bid during the live auction are a weekend getaway to Chateau Elan Winery and Resort, a guided turkey hunt, NASCAR tickets, a weekend trip to Fripp Island, S.C., and a flight in a private plane with the chance to pilot.
Tickets to the event are $65 and include two complimentary drink tickets, a cocktail buffet ticket, one raffle ticket and $5,000 in play gambling money.
The live auction and raffle drawing will follow dinner and games.
Space is limited and the deadline for reservations is Jan. 20. For more information, call Wahl at 770-464-0064.
