Former Salem basketball standout Joy Thomas started 2008 with a strong effort for Lawson State Community College, scoring a career-high 14 points and collecting six rebounds against Georgia Perimeter on Jan 5.
It was her second straight game in double figures for Lawson. She also scored 11 points and a career-high four steals against Kennedy King College.
The 5-foot-10 forward is averaging 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds a game for the Lady Cougars.
Thomas' Salem teammate, Kristina Huff, scored eight points in a Dec. 28 game against Georgia Perimeter. Huff, a 5-foot-8 guard, is averaging 3.2 points a game.
Riggins continues strong start at Northwest-Shoals
Justin Riggins is continuing his strong freshman season at Northwest-Shoals Community College.
The former Rockdale standout recently had a four-game stretch of scoring in double figures. He started the streak with 16 points against Marion Military Institute; he added 12 against Columbia State, tossed in 16 against L.B. Wallace and then had 11 against Jackson.
The 6-foot-4 guard is averaging 8.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists a game this season for Northwest-Shoals.
Local duo goes bowling for Central Florida
Heritage's Chance Henderson and Salem's Torrell Johnson both started for Central Florida on defense in the Golden Knights' Liberty Bowl clash with Mississippi State on Dec. 29.
Henderson, who started at middle linebacker, recorded one solo tackle and one assists against the Bulldogs. The sophomore finished the season as the third-leading tackler for UCF with 74 total stops (49 solo, 25 assists). He also had seven tackles for loss, one sack and one interception in 13 games.
Johnson, who started at defensive tackle, registered one solo tackle that went for a 2-yard loss. The sophomore recorded 13 solo stops and six assists in 13 games for UCF. He also had 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
