Rockdale Citizen Poll 1-12-08

This week's Citizen Poll was an open line.

"In the Today in History you say that Keith Ellison of Minnesota's 5th District became the first Muslim member of Congress. I beg to different. I think Obama was sworn in on the Quran. You need to get where you can check this, because I think they've tried to erase everything about it. I was totally shocked they would allow him to be sworn in on the Quran, you need to check this out and get your figures straight. Thank you."

Editor's Note: Keith Ellison was sworn into office on Jan. 4, 2007, becoming the first - and to date only - Muslim member of Congress. He swore his oath of office using a copy of the Quran that was once owned by Thomas Jefferson. Barack Obama is a self-professed Christian, and is a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He was sworn into office in January 2005 using his own copy of the Bible.

"Let me start out by saying something too seldom heard by our educators today. Thank You. Specifically, to Dr. Ray and his staff at Lorraine Elementary I would like to say job well done. I'm not sure what the person who wrote in last week was complaining about when speaking of Dr. Ray and his staff. From just a little research I found that Lorraine consistently finished in the top three in nearly every category measured on the CRCT, and always well above the county average. On a personal note, it has been my pleasure to serve on the Lorraine school council for the last two years and I have found Dr. Ray to be one of the most moral, hard working, intelligent, and passionate people I have ever met. As far as Dr. Ray's staff is concerned, I have found them to be nothing but professional and have never witnessed any of them "standing around gossiping about others." I am admittedly biased when it comes to the teachers of Lorraine, as my wife is one, and while she may be a bit verbose around the house, I know that your children could not wish for a better teacher than my wife or any of her colleagues. It's pretty easy to criticize people when you don't have to sign your name to your statements. So once again, let me, Tom Lindley, say what I'm sure a vast majority of Lorraine parents would and should say. Thank you."

"I just read Friday's blotter and there's something like between 145 and 150 people in there who've been arrested for various things, and 66 of them were for no drivers license or suspended license. It seems to me like there's something wrong with that picture, because I was born and raised in this country, and every time I go to buy a car I have to have a drivers license and insurance, and I have to show it to people. Here are all these vehicles on the road and no drivers license. Looks to me like there's a little something wrong there."

"My comment is in reference to the person who thought that Judge (Sidney) Nation was living in the 17th century. My opinion is that we need more judges like him. If you want to live in the kind of environment that Alaska is allowing for its citizens, Delta is ready when you are! We don't accept that behavior in our county. Illegal is Illegal!"

"A day late and a dollar short would be a good mission statement for our county water department. We have seen where the water department has not been on top of their major funding - billing collections, basically the revenue stream for the department - which now, as we know, is being moved under the finance department. Let's continue to give the finance department more and more responsibilities. Let's even add some more red tape for the water consumers to deal with. The county wants to reduce the water pressure in some areas of the county to reduce leak potential. Some of the lines are 60 years old and the reduced water pressure will allow those lines to limp along for a few more years. And we also have found where some of the water customers have been underbilled for their water usage. I wonder for how long those great deals were going on? I am sure those businesses have budgeted for that increase! Again and again we have seen where the water department management and the commissioners have continued to look out for the real owners of those lines and services - YOU, the citizens, or have they? As this election year starts out, you have an opportunity to make a change, get involved, maybe one of you has some great ideas and will want to run, and offer us the real owners of the county some vision!"

"To the concerned citizen worried about the demise of Lorraine Elementary. Do not worry. Your school is not alone on the downward road. (J.H.) House is headed for a similar demise. Parents and teachers are all discontent with the new direction this School of Excellence is taking."

"Conserve Water!!! Many, many times a day we hear it on the radio, see it on TV, read it in the news from our elected officials. I'm beginning to believe that the problem is more one of over-development, development which our elected officials refuse to constrain, than the present period of dry weather. Sure, the last year has been dry. That will be corrected in the future by the forces of nature, but politicians will never relax water restrictions because to do so will limit their desire to expand development in this area of the state. Rockdale County is now overflowing with people and our limited water supply is way over taxed. It's time for the citizens of Rockdale to demand that our elected officials limit growth in order to have quality living conditions here or to elect new officials who will. Think, 'over-development' and 'over-population' when you hear, see or read, 'water conservation.'"

"Congrats to Pastor Eric Lee and all of the community who organized the Walk by Faith march last Saturday. You are to be commended for your efforts to bring the community together through worship and across denominational lines. This could not have happened at a better time than now. Every week we are inundated with comments in this very newspaper from citizens who do not respect nor recognize other cultures, races and denominations as being a part of our community. The beginnings of this county was about sharing and togetherness as this county was formed through land donated by all of our surrounding counties. Few also realize the county was named after a church. How appropriate that Pastor Lee and the other ministers and churches of this community should bring us back to a sense of unity and togetherness befitting the roots of the county history. This type of event is the legacy we want to leave with our children, not one that promotes disregard for our fellow humans because of the color of their skin or their faith! Again, a big thank you to Pastor Lee, Springfield Baptist Church, The Church in The Now, and all others who organized, supported and participated in the event! Thank you Rockdale Citizen for the coverage you provided of the event. A job well done!"

"This comment is for the parents and teachers entering Young American Christian School off of Honey Creek Road. All I have to say is 'OPEN YOUR EYES!' Earlier this week I came so close to hitting a woman that decided she wanted to turn in front of me to enter the school. Not only would I have hit her daughter in the passenger seat, I would have injured my 1-year-old that was in the back seat. People traveling over there between 7:45 and 8:30 in the morning know what I'm talking about. In front of that school is a major danger zone. The speed limit is 45 mph and with people turning from every way. I want to get the kids to school safely and me to travel by with no problems!"

"I'm glad to see the Board of Commissioners moving ahead with improvements to RWR. They are sorely needed. I endorse the comment made last week by somebody that the infrastructure needs to be repaired and operating well. That speaks volumes to anybody wishing to come into the county or wanting to bring a business into the county. I wonder why we haven't started advertising for a director of RWR, unless the county intends to privatize it?"
