Rockdale Citizen Poll 1-5-08

This week's Citizen Poll was an open line ...

"My child has attended Lorraine Elementary for several years and I have seen the school go downhill year after year. Wake up, Dr. (David) Ray. If some of the teachers would teach instead of standing around gossiping about others, I bet our CRCT scores wouldn't have dropped."

"From my home to your home, my family to yours, may the comptroller of the universe ensure that we, individually and collectively, enjoy the promise of the holiday season and the anticipation of the new year that will provide us the wisdom, strength and courage to share time and space in peace, harmony and productive co-existence."

"I just need to comment on the unexpected decorations that went up just before Christmas this past weekend!!! My husband and I were at that crazy roundabout behind the library and saw sparkly stuff and large ornaments on the children's fountain - someone had decorated it for Christmas! We got out and took a couple of pictures; it made me feel happy about our little town. Then when we went over the tracks at the Depot, another little tree was decorated. I don't know if it was the same people or not, but it was really cute. I'm grateful that, for all of the way we've grown so fast (and it seems like the crime rate has gone up as we've gotten larger, too), the sense of being a little town still pops up around here sometimes. Thanks to whoever did it! I should also note that when I went back to show one of my kids a couple of days later, it was being cleaned up by a couple of people with a big bag! And I recognized them!!"

"I read with sorrow that Johnny Yearwood passed last week. He was the best teacher I ever had. He had a difficult job teaching construction to a bunch of rowdy teenage boys, but he did an amazing job as evidenced by the many professional contractors who were his former students. He truly cared about his students and would do whatever he could to help any of them. We need more teachers of his caliber. He will be missed by many."

"Attention sports writers of the Rockdale Citizen: As an avid reader of the sports section and a LONG-time subscriber of your newspaper, it has come to my attention that you are not aware of the other major university of this state who has also accomplished what it takes to go to a bowl game. Everyone who reads your paper is not a Bulldog fan! Go Jackets!"

"Welcome to 2008, Rockdale County! I have some simple challenges to those who can make a dramatic impact in our community. For the Board of Education, allow our teachers to do their job: teach our children. Take swift action on the small percentage of disruptive students in the classrooms. For law enforcement, seek out those who commit crimes against our local businesses, those visiting and those of us who live here, and deliver them to the jail. For the judges, make this the year to teach the criminals (adult and juvenile) that it will cost them for doing their crimes here in Rockdale County. Give them ample reflection time in jail and hefty fines so they will not want to come back to Rockdale to commit crimes in the future. For the county commissioners, get our infrastructure organized while controlling the ongoing growth. Our system just cannot handle the growth. Please plan ahead this year. For if we, the community, want to attract higher-paying businesses to help with our taxes, we need to make an impact on the ways we have been doing business here in Rockdale County. We can be an awesome community, but we must deliver results by our actions, and not our words!"

"On a vacant building on North Johnson Street was a sign with a picture of a woman with propellers on her breasts advertising a gentleman's club. All harmless fun, advertising for good cause. When is the last time we saw a man with his pants around his ankles and a propeller over his penis and called it all in good fun or for a good cause to advertise a movie. Isn't it about time we start showing some respect to our women, wives, daughters and ourselves?"

Editor's Note: The sign you are referring to was not an advertisement, but rather a prop for a film being shot in Newborn.

"I hope everyone has a great 2008.Darrell, 2008 is gonna be a brand new year and Tech may beat Georgia this year over there in Athens. They may kill that high school quarterback and that high school halfback, but y'all have a good time trying to kill us again and we'll try to have fun killing you. I hope you win your bowl games and I hope you win all your basketball games, but you aren't gong to beat Tech in 2008, so you can just forget that. Everyone have a great 2008 and go Georgia Tech and we'll see you in 2008."

"Who are King Jason and Queen JaNice? My heart goes out to both families in the shooting case, and I want the aunt to know that this citizen is praying for both parties involved and their families, especially the parents and siblings. It's 2008. If you cannot drive, old or young, please just stop. That's my new year wish."

"Kudos, Iowa; hello, New Hampshire. Arise and be heard Rockdale County and the state of Georgia, vote for change; Democracy at its best. Shake the bondage of complacency under which we all currently experience. The age of Aquarius may still be in progress, but all single voices are being heard. No more red; no more blue; just one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. This is the time and reason to stand tall and be counted; the time for despair and compliancy to be replaced with accountability. Prepare to be an informed voter. Start now with maximum energy. The future of our community depends on you, no matter how deeply some are stuck in the complacency of the past. 'It is on,' don't be left 'just holding your hands;' the future of our community depends on you. 'It's not over until ...' your two cents are counted. Iowa is just a wake-up call, but failure to recognize the significance could be the last count. This is the Age of the Informed Voter! Think and address the big picture, not just your portrait."

"In response to the invitations to leave Rockdale County senders: You must be joking! No, I am one of many and more to come who will be around until things freeze over and folks as you are exposed for ice skating without shoes. What you attributed to biased reporting by the Citizen is really an attempt to alert the citizenry without being sued; yet, in so doing, the Citizen could be guilty of complicity. What is needed is an 'outside' official entity to do a thorough audit of city and county practices and procedures, to include an in-depth government financial audit and published report. The mayor's carefully worded response to a Letter to the Editor of the Citizen was a beaut - nice attempt at another cover-up."
