COVINGTON - Authorities with the Covington Police Department, Covington Fire Department and Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Bomb Disposal Unit were called to LB Recycling Center on Washington Street on Monday afternoon following the discovery of dynamite in a load of scrap metal.
According to CPD Detective Lt. Mark Jones, someone brought a load of scrap metal to the recycling center about 1 p.m. While workers were processing the load, they discovered what appeared to be several cases of dynamite in a metal box. Jones said it was unknown exactly how old the explosives were. He said the act of leaving them there did not appear to be a deliberate terroristic threat against the business. According to Jones, police had information as to the identity of the person who left the load of metal and they were attempting to make contact with him Monday. The GBI was in the process of disposing of the explosives at the site early Monday evening. Joel Griffin can be reached at joel.griffin@newtoncitizen.com.More like this story
