Law training course starts next month

CONYERS - Whether learning how to handle a gun or gaining an understanding of how the jail works, the Citizen Sheriff's Academy gives residents an opportunity to learn about law enforcement in Rockdale County.

Applications for the Sheriff's Academy are being accepted. The CSA is a 10-week program that meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday beginning March 25. The CSA is free and available to all Rockdale County residents. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass background and driver's history checks.

The Sheriff's Academy will offer tours of all operations of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office and at the county jail. Students will also ride with RCSO deputies on the road and learn how investigators work crime scenes and collect evidence in building a case.

Students will also attend a Saturday firearms class, take a tour of the jail and Emergency 991 Center.

RCSO Spokeswoman Sgt. Jodi Shupe said the Sheriff's Academy was designed by Rockdale County Sheriff Jeff Wigington and his staff to promote a better understanding of law enforcement and to educate residents on what is involved at each step from when a crime is reported, investigated and prosecuted.

"The Sheriff's Academy classes are designed to follow the evolution of a call," Shupe said. "Each class takes on a portion of the evolution of a call from the first report, investigation, arrest and to when it's prosecuted."

Shupe said the Sheriff's Academy has become very popular since it began in 1999. She said the classes are good for individuals considering a career in law enforcement or for those just interested in learning more about local law enforcement.

Applications and class schedules are available at the Rockdale County's Sheriff's Office, located at 911 Chambers Drive, off Sigman Road. An application and schedule of classes can also be requested by e-mail to wanda.wypasek@rockdalecounty.org.
