BGCA forms alliance for Hispanic youth

From Staff Reports

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Boys & Girls Clubs of America have formed a strategic alliance to ensure Hispanic youth are on track to secure a college education.

This alliance offers college scholarship opportunities for club members participating in the BGCA Latino Outreach Initiative. Working with both parents and young people, the alliance reinforces the message that entering and graduating from college are very achievable goals. Most importantly, the HSF/BGCA partnership addresses the fact that securing a college education is critical to a successful future.

In the new alliance with BGCA, HSF conducts interactive workshops at 12 Boys & Girls Clubs piloting BGCA's Latino Outreach Initiative. The weekly sessions, titled "My Future, My Choice, My Education," provide information and support to help youth navigate their way from middle school to high school to college and on to successful professional careers. It also offers opportunities for scholarships and enrichment programs for high achieving youth.

The HSF/BGCA Alliance additionally offers bilingual sessions for the parents, a program known as PASOS. During these gatherings, parents learn how to better understand the U.S. education and grading system by examining issues such as testing, financial aid and helping children with their studies.

The effort includes two other alliance members. The Goldman Sachs Foundation co-founded the national effort and is funding three-year pilot programs at clubs in Chicago and San Antonio, under the auspices of the HSF/BGCA/GSF Alliance. The Goizueta Foundation is supporting pilot programs in 10 Boys & Girls Clubs in Georgia and providing scholarships for students who excel.
