Man charged with attacking his neighbor

COVINGTON - A Covington man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault last week after he allegedly attacked his neighbor with a metal pipe.

Around 8 p.m. Thursday, Deputy Sammy Banks responded to a residence on Atla Road in reference to a fight, he said in an incident report.

According to Lt. Mark Mitchell, spokesman for the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the suspect, Johnny Womac, 52, reportedly became involved in an altercation with his neighbor and struck him with a metal pipe.

"The victim received several blows to the arm and chest area," he said. "He received medical treatment on the scene."

Mitchell said that there had been a dispute between the two over the victim's dogs, but indicated that he didn't know whether that facilitated the confrontation or not. The NCSO spokesman also said that Womac possibly struck one of his neighbor's dogs, but not with the pipe.

According to the incident report, Womac appeared to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the fight, while the victim was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

Three juveniles were also reportedly present when the assault took place.

In addition to aggravated assault, Womac has been charged with three counts of cruelty to children in the second degree, cruelty to animals and criminal trespass.
