Forfeits help Tigers defeat Bulldogs

COVINGTON - Rockdale won the battle but lost the war against Alcovy as the Bulldogs won five of the nine matches they actually wrestled Tuesday.

The Tigers won the match 46-27, partially from winning four of the five matches forfeited.

"It was nice to get a win for our last home match," Alcovy coach Mike Mostek said. "We really didn't get to see Rockdale's full lineup, and they didn't see ours, but it was still nice to get a win; let the guys get on the mat and get some mat time."

Alcovy took an early 12-0 lead when Adam Pollard (130 pounds) and Travis Knight (135) got second-period pins.

After forfeit wins at 140 and 145, Steven Williams (152) continued the trend with a pin in the second period to put the Tigers up 30-0.

Rockdale got their first points on a forfeit at 160 before Jimmy Brown (171) and Rashaud Ferrell closed the gap with a pair of wins.

"The matches that we wrestle we definitely want to win," Rockdale coach Craig Hargrove said. "We want to get the guys that are sick and have other issues back in the lineup and get them where they need to be."

William Ledford (215) got things back on track for Alcovy with a win, while the Tigers got another six points with a forfeit at 285.

However, Rockdale won three of the final four matches. Jake Morris (103) and Luis Ponce (125) earned pins, while Eric Banks (119) beat his opponent.

"We're just glad to get our whole lineup back. We still have a few guys out, but overall it was a good night of wrestling," Hargrove said. "Some of the guys are wrestling where they need to be some of the other still need to sharpen some things up."
