COVINGTON - Super Tuesday is here. Voters across the county will be casting their ballots in the Presidential Preference Primary today.
On the local front, voters will also decide whether seniors age 65 and older will receive an additional homestead exemption from Newton County school district ad valorem taxes.
In Porterdale, there will be a special election for the Post 3 city council seat, as well as a referendum for the sale of distilled spirits by the drink. Voting will take place at the Porterdale Fire Department.
Board of Elections Director Donna Morrison is predicting that 20 percent or better of the county's 45,911 active registered voters will turn out today.
Last week's advanced voting drew larger numbers than expected, she said.
"It was more than we expected for the advanced voting period for this election. There were steady lines ... but nobody waited longer than 40 to 45 minutes," she said.
In all, 2,381 voters participated in advanced and absentee voting - 1,076 Republican and 1,305 Democrats.
Morrison said the high turnout for advanced voting could help keep the wait time down today.
The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Everyone in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote, Morrison said.
At the polls, voters will be required to present one of six forms of photo ID, such as a valid Georgia driver's license, a current passport, a military or government issued ID.
Morrison urged voters to make sure they are aware of precinct changes before heading to the polls.
Those in the Cedar Shoals Precinct will now vote at Porterdale Baptist Church on North Broad Street in Porterdale.
The new location for the Stansells Precinct is Believer's Fellowship Assembly of God at 1855 Christian Circle, off Brown Bridge Road.
Voters in the Almon, Brick Store, Fairview and Buck Creek precincts may also be affected by a change in precinct location.
