Eagles roll to tournament win at Winder

WINDER - Eastside's wrestling squad took top honors Saturday after placing first in the George Thompson Memorial Tournament at Winder-Barrow High School.

The Eagles chalked up 282.5 points overall, more than 100 points past second-place Heritage (177).

Oconee finished third with 158 points, followed by Clarke Central (130.5), Apalachee (109), Buford (107), Chestatee (67) and Winder-Barrow (36).

For Eastside, two school records were set at the tournament. All 14 varsity wrestlers were seeded in the tournament brackets, and each wrestler placed in his respective weight class.

"Having wrestled well in our previous two tournaments (the South Metro and the Eric Hill Memorial Tournament) and getting the opportunity to see some of the area wrestlers Saturday has really given the boys a level of confidence," Eastside coach Brandon Blakeman said. "That is crucial at this time of the season heading into the area duals championship (Jan. 9 and 10 at Oconee High School) and the state duals championship (Jan. 16 and 17 at the Macon Coliseum)."

Eastside's tournament champions included Brandon Gatt (103 pounds), Danny Gatt (119), Dalton Bragg (135), Trevor Bailey (140), Jonathan Palmer (160), Dalton Temple (171) and Tommy Williams (189).

Runners-up were Cody Durden (112), Joel Stafford (125), Michael Green (130) and Lincoln Temple (215).

Eastside will compete next at 9 a.m. Sunday at Rockdale High during the Rockdale Duals.
