The Newton boys basketball team opened up the Powerade Festival with a 70-41 victory over Alpharetta at North Gwinnett High School on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Eastside girls dropped a 61-53 decision to Mundy's Mill in the semifinals of the Charger Hooptacular at Eagle's Landing Christian Academy. BOYS Newton 70, Alpharetta 41 At Suwanee, Derrick Henry fired in 19 points as the Rams (9-0) advanced to the semifinals of the Powerade Festival with an easy win over Alpharetta. Jamon Hawkins added 15 points, Charles Edwards chipped in 14 and Tee Farley finished with 12 for the Rams, who are ranked No. 9 in Class AAAAA. Newton will meet North Gwinnett in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Monday. "We played well. We had a 13-0 run toward the end of the first quarter and all of a sudden were up 19-9. They hung in there for a while, but that was pretty much it, " Newton coach Rick Rasmussen said. "We only had three turnovers as a team, which is excellent. We shared the ball and finished with 18 assists. It was a good tuneup game for the rest of the tournament." GIRLS Mundy's Mill 61, Eastside 53 At McDonough, sophomore Paige Alexander scored 14 points as the Lady Eagles (5-5) saw their three-game win streak come to an end against Mundy's Miller at the Charger Hooptacular. J'Quyra Moncur-Blue added nine points for Eastside, which plays in the third-place game of the tournament against the Forest Park-Riverwood loser at 4 p.m. Monday. The Lady Eagles opened tournament play Friday with a 68-38 victory over Whitewater. Junior Ieisha Williams had 12 points to pace Eastside, while Raven Williams chipped in eight.More like this story
