COVINGTON - Two accidents involving children and their Christmas presents marred the holiday in Newton County.
According to Lt. Mark Mitchell of the Newton County Sheriff's Office, a 7-year-old boy was airlifted to an Atlanta trauma center after the bicycle he was riding struck a vehicle at an intersection in the Settler's Grove subdivision off Ga. Highway 142. Mitchell said the boy suffered head injuries. Mitchell said the crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. Christmas afternoon and is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol. Earlier that day, Mitchell said a 13-year-old boy operating an ATV crashed in the woods behind the Silos of Ellington subdivision off Brown Bridge Road. Mitchell said that child suffered head and arm injuries and was also taken to an Atlanta trauma center for treatment. He said that accident, as well, is being investigated by the GSP. No further details of the incidents were available from the GSP and neither child's present medical condition is known.
