Nesmith to remain at helm of Conyers Middle

CONYERS - The Rockdale County Board of Education approved Conyers Middle School Interim Principal Maryland Nesmith as principal of the school at its December work session.

After an executive session Dec. 11, the board members unanimously approved a recommendation from Superintendent Samuel King about the move, which comes more than a year after they approved her as interim principal.

Cindy Ball, director of community relations for Rockdale County Public Schools, said the superintendent has no specific time frame to recommend an interim principal to be named principal.

"It is at his discretion and case by case," she said.

In October 2007, the board voted to appoint then-Assistant Principal Nesmith as interim principal when then-Principal Gene Baker was appointed as director of Student Achievement, a new cabinet position created by the superintendent.

Nesmith, who started at CMS in 2003 as a teacher, said she has enjoyed her time in the new position and is looking forward to continuing at the school.

"So far, this has been a job filled with rewards," Nesmith said Friday. "The teachers, parents, students and county officials have been very supportive. ... I'm still growing and learning in this position, and I want to make everybody proud and do whatever I can to make sure these students are successful."
