Covington/Newton County United Way: Director: Group will meet goal

COVINGTON - Though many are having to watch every penny spent this holiday season, the people of Newton County have once again proven they are a generous lot, according to the director of Covington/Newton County United Way.

The organization has nearly met its $475,000 fund-raising goal, Director Doris Strickland said.

Currently at about $435,000 in donations, Strickland said she believes the goal will be met once a few industries and employers wrap up their collection campaigns.

"In times like these, it's absolutely wonderful," Strickland said of the outpouring from the community since the fundraising campaign began in September.

United Way has actually seen an increase in donations from some industries, such as General Mills, Snapping Shoals and C.R. Bard, Strickland reported.

"I know we're going to meet the goal - it's a matter of when, not if," she said, adding that she's still sending out solicitation letters to local businesses.

United Way supports about 20 charitable organizations. The organization's board of directors will meet in the new year to determine how to allocate the money raised.

Individuals who would like to contribute should make checks payable to United Way. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 1344, Covington, GA 30015.
