Police: Boy steals wallet from shopper

CONYERS - One shopper's holiday season got off to a rocky start when a young boy reportedly snatched her wallet from her purse and then jumped in the passenger seat of a get-away vehicle waiting in the parking lot outside a department store.

Conyers Police Chief David Cathcart said the victim reported that she got out of her vehicle at Belk about noon on Friday when a young boy approached her in the parking lot.

"The young, black male approached her and said something to her. She said she couldn't understand him and then he suddenly grabbed her purse," Cathcart said. "He was unable to get it off her shoulder, but he reached inside and pulled her wallet out of the bag."

The boy then ran to a silver four-door car and jumped in the passenger seat before the driver pulled away, the chief said.

"The car was last seen going through the parking lot near Circuit City," Cathcart said.

The boy was described as being of medium build, between the ages of 7 and 9 years old and about 4 to 5 feet tall. He was wearing a black zip-up hooded sweatshirt with his hood pulled over his forehead. No description was given of the driver of the car in which the boy rode away.

"Usually when we talk about juvenile crime, we're talking about young teenagers from 12 to 15 years old - nothing involving kids this young," Cathcart said.

He said if the boy is found, he could face juvenile charges and the adult involved could also face charges.
