Lady Bulldogs 1st, boys 2nd in home meet

CONYERS - Rockdale continued its underwater assault by racing to a second-place finish Thursday night during its home meet against four other schools, including county rival Heritage.

Rockdale racked up 175 points overall, just two behind first-place winner Whitewater. Heritage took third (147), while up-and-coming Eastside placed fifth (8).

"I'm satisfied in that the girls continue to swim well, and the boys continue to improve each week," Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing said. "However, individually we didn't swim our best, so hopefully this means we can actually even do better as a team as the year goes on."

Heritage's Dylan Johnson was the only swimmer to qualify for state after racing to a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 7.62 seconds).

For the girls, the Lady Bulldogs captured first with 107 points.

The Rockdale girls - Miranda Wright, Nicole Young, Melanie Wright and Patty Murphy - took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:09.10.

Heritage's Kat Baize finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:18.79).

Miranda Wright was first in the 200 individual medley (2:34.70) and 500-yard freestyle (6:24.69).

Heritage's Abbey Justman took first in the 50 freestyle (28.67).

Murphy was first in the 100 butterfly (1:16.31).

Heritage's Rebecca Bradley finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.74).

In boys action, Heritage took second (73) followed by Rockdale (68).

Matt Shamp of the Patriots finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:09.99).

Heritage's Jamari Thompson was first in the 500 freestyle (6:47.58). Teammate Anthony Bazzani captured first in the 100 backstroke (1:08.50).

Rockdale's 400-yard freestyle relay team - Eric Richardson, Amir Munajj, Nolan Roberts and Buck Farmer - took first with a time of 4:12.29.

"I don't like to lose period, but I'll take a two-point loss to a good teamlike Whitewater over getting beat by a lot because it shows that we probably could have won with a change here or there," Sansing said. "I'm constantly tweaking the lineup and trying to find any statistical edge I can."
