Newton Citizen
Top right, Coroner Bob Wheeler, right, enjoys a joke with longtime friend Artis Standard during Friday afternoon's retirement reception in Wheeler's honor at the Newton County Judicial Center. Well-wishers, family and friends gathered to pay tribute to Wheeler for his 20 years of service as Newton County Coroner. In addition to accolades from friends and co-workers, Wheeler received a plaque of appreciation from the Newton County Sheriff's Office, a proclamation paying tribute to his service to the county and state from Gov. Sonny Perdue, and a flag that flew over the state capitol in his honor.
Bottom right, enjoying one of the "tall tales" told on Wheeler, he is flanked by his family - wife Ann and granddaughter McKayla Doss. Statistics show that Wheeler answered 50 calls as coroner when he began the job in 1989. That number grew to 250 calls in 2008.More like this story
