Alcovy wrestlers ready to make mark in 4-AAAA

COVINGTON - With nine returning starters, including four state qualifiers and two state medalist, Alcovy's wrestling team is ready as it enters Area 4-AAAA.

Returning from last year's team are Jon Seymore (103 weight division), Zach Watola (119), Zach Barton (125), Adam Pollard (135), Travis Knight (140), John Pollard (145), Malachi Outlaw (160), William Ledford (171) and David Jones (285).

Hoping to make an impact for the Alcovy team are Tyler Thompson (112), Seth Parris (130), Quinton Collins (145), Dakota Papke (152), Jacob Roberson (189) and Jeremy Peck (215).

Third year coach Mike Mostek is hoping to qualify for the state duals and to finish higher than last year's 16th in the traditional meet.

While the Tigers no longer have Eastside and Rockdale to contend with, after moving from Area 8-AAAA, it will not get easier as they have Stockbridge, Jones County and No. 3-ranked Ola in their area now.

Alcovy will see what they have and how to get by without injured regular starters John Pollard, Barton and Peck when they battle in the South Metro Tournament.

To help get ready for the area duals, which will start Jan. 9 at Ola, the Tigers will compete in several large scale events, including the Brookwood Invitational and the Social Circle Invitational during the winter break.

Prior to the area traditional tournament, held at Jonesboro starting Feb. 6, the Tigers will battle in the Redskin Rumble as well as three-way matches against Upson-Lee, Pike County and Houston County.

Both Upson-Lee and Pike County made it to the state duals last season.
