CONYERS - The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is investigating an early morning get-together of teenagers on Saturday that led to a 15-year-old boy being sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.
According to the RCSO, on Monday afternoon the boy - who resides in Newton County - was listed in serious condition at Gwinnett Medical Center after being upgraded from critical condition when he was taken off of a ventilator and was able to breathe on his own. Later Monday evening, he was transferred to Atlanta Medical Center due to complications.
According to RCSO Spokeswoman Sgt. Jodi Shupe, deputies responded to 2612 Fairway Court at 4:35 a.m. Saturday and transported the boy by air ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center.
Deputies recovered a handgun and questioned several witnesses at the scene. Investigators believe that the shooting took place in the driveway of the home, where a group of teens had gathered on the porch, Shupe said.
The parents of one of the victim's friends were asleep in the home at the time of the shooting, she added.
Shupe said investigators planned to issue warrants in connection with the incident, but would not say for whom they had been issued.
Investigators were continuing to look into the incident on Monday evening.
