COVINGTON - The Newton Medical Center Auxiliary is offering a way to honor loved ones this holiday season while at the same time making a difference for a good cause.
The public is invited to purchase luminaries, which the auxiliary is terming "gifts of love" in honor or remembrance of family and friends.
"We are inviting the public to participate by giving a minimum $5 'Gift of Love' donation in memory or honor of a loved one," said NMC Auxiliary Board member Frances Rogers. "Their donation will be represented by a luminary placed along the Hospital Drive route."
The luminaries will be lit during a ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15.
The names of those honored will be read and entertainment will be provided by students from Cousins Middle School and local musician Mac McKibben. Santa will be there for pictures, and refreshments will also be available.
The money raised will go to three projects supported by the auxiliary - the Auxiliary Health Career Scholarship Fund, which awards several scholarships of $1,500 yearly to students going into the medical field; the Digital Mammography Equipment Fund, to pay off equipment purchases for the Women's Diagnostic Center; or The Hope Boutique, which provides free wigs, turbans, scarves and breast prostheses to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
"It's a great way to remember a loved one and help some very worthwhile causes," Rogers said.
Donors are welcome to designate which project they would like to support - donations without a designation will likely go to the Digital Mammography Equipment Fund, said Volunteer Services Director Martha Taylor.
Donations can be made up to the day of the event, she said.
Donations should be sent to Newton Medical Center Auxiliary, 5126 Hospital Drive, Covington, GA, 30014.
