CONYERS - The Heritage volleyball team moved its Area 8-AAAA record to 2-0 with an impressive win over Habersham Central on Thursday night.
The Lady Patriots (5-5 overall) beat the Lady Raiders 25-17, 13-25, 25-15 after topping Eagle's Landing 25-17, 25-20 in their opening match.
"I was kind of disappointed how we started the first and second games against Habersham Central," Heritage coach David Buddenbaum said. "We were down 9-1 in the first game and started off down 6-0 in the second game. I was pleased with how we railled to win in the first game and how we came out in the third game. We just have to come out focused and ready to play."
In the first game, Heritage trailed 15-9 before Arabia Urami reeled off 11 straight service points for a 20-15 lead. Olivia Wasdin had three kills during the run, and Taylor Bailey chipped in a kill and a thunderous block.
Bailey added two blocks and another kill down the stretch as the Lady Patriots pulled out a win in the first game 25-17.
"Arabi did a great job serving. I think she scored 11 straight points off her serve," Buddenbaum said. "Of course, it wasn't just her serve. We really started playing well at that point. Taylor kind of took over at the end of the first game. She's our team leader and, as she goes, our team goes."
In the second game, Habersham Central seized control from the start, building an 8-1 lead. The Lady Raiders never let Heritage back into the contest and tied the match at one game apiece.
In the third game, Rachel Jubran's strong service pushed Heritage out to a comfortable 7-0 lead. Mikala Flonnoy had two kills during the run for the Lady Patriots.
Heritage maintained its advantage for most of the game. At the end, Mikayla Charles and Umrani each had a pair of kills to put the game and match away.
"We served a little better in the third game, and that helped. Rachel got us off to a good start," Buddenbaum said. "The difference for us in the second and third games was runs. We couldn't get any runs going in the second game, and that's what this game is all about. In third game, we started with a run and kept on going. It's been a good week, starting off 2-0 in the area."
Bailey had 11 kills and six blocks against Habersham Central.
