COVINGTON - Newton High School staff members are encouraging parents of senior students to be involved with their future graduates this school year.
"It takes school and home working together to help students have a successful year of learning, as well as make post secondary plans," said Shelley Lawyer, college admissions and financial aid advisor at Newton High School.
In order for parents to be prepared, the school will hold a senior parent meeting next week.
School officials are inviting parents of graduating seniors to the meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the school's auditorium. It's expected to last about an hour and 15 minutes.
"The student services staff, in conjunction with the Georgia Finance Commission, will provide information to parents that will be helpful in successfully getting their students through their senior year," Lawyer said. "Our theme for the meeting is 'Navigating through the senior year.'"
Topics to be discussed include graduation requirements, financial aid, testing, credit recovery and post-secondary options, including college, the military and employment.
At the meeting, parents will be able to pick up handouts and resources to aid them through the year.
Lawyer said that throughout the year, parents should expect to attend other important meetings, such as a financial aid workshop in January. Senior students will attend similar meetings during the school day, but also are invited to parent meetings if they wish to attend.
Lawyer said the meeting won't include a Question and Answer session, but parents and students with questions or concerns should call the school during the school day to make an appointment with the appropriate staff members.
Alcovy and Eastside high schools held a senior parent meeting and senior student seminars earlier this month to discuss similar topics.
