Lady Bulldogs split first matches
FORSYTH - The Rockdale volleyball team beat host Mary Persons in three sets (18-25, 25-14 and 25-20) to earn a split their season-opening matches Tuesday night.
Kelsey Girardot paced the Lady Bulldogs in the victory with 11 kills and four aces. Brianna Dennis chipped in five kills, while Taylor Mitchell and Jasmin Miller finished with four kills apiece. Chelsea Nunn added 18 assists.
"We were very sluggish at first, bascially until the second game against Mary Persons," Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing said. "Something finally clicked, and we looked like a real volleyball team. We cannot afford to wait that long every night to start playing."
In the opening match, Rockdale dropped a 25-17, 25-14 decision to Houston County. Girardot had five kills and two aces, while Nunn added six assists.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action tonight at county rival Salem.
Eastside goes 1-1 at Apalachee
BETHLEHEM - The Lady Eagles lost their first match to Apalachee 25-15, 25-21 before winning the best-of-three series from Athens Christian on Tuesday.
Eastside beat Athens Christian 25-21 in the first game before the Lady Eagles tied the match with a 25-23 win. The Lady Eagles came out strong in the third game and shut down Athens Christian with a 25-10 win.
"We made a lot of errors the first few games, but tightened up defensively and came together offensively to finish the night in good form," Eastside head coach Angie Lewis said. "The last game against Athens Christian, we played extremely well. We looked good as a team, and it felt good to leave the court that way."
Newton softball starts region play with a win over Stephenson
STONE MOUNTAIN - The Lady Rams worked as a unit as Newton downed Region 2-AAAAA opponent Stephenson 13-2 on Tuesday.
Chermisha Roberts collected one of Newton's biggest hits with a triple in the game.
