Tractor-trailer hit by train in Olde Town
CPD: No one injured in crash

CONYERS - A train crashed into a tractor-trailer sometime just after midnight Saturday when the truck got stuck as it attempted to cross railroad tracks in Olde Town.

Conyers Police Chief David Cathcart said the crash occurred about 12:30 a.m. at the CSX railroad crossing near Rockbridge Road and Green Street.

Cathcart said the driver was attempting to turn onto Rockbridge Road from Green Street when the truck got stuck on the tracks. Cathcart said the man, who is not from the area, apparently did not realize how sharply he had to turn the rig and his wheels went off the road.

"When he realized he was stuck, he got out of the truck in an attempt to find help," the chief said. "The truck was sitting on the tracks when the train came through."

Cathcart said the train struck the trailer, which was empty.

"Thank God no one was hurt and there was no merchandise to be recovered," he said.

Cathcart said officers on the scene contacted officials at CSX Railroad, who said they were satisfied with the Conyers Police Department's handling of the accident. He said he does not anticipate any charges will be filed.

The area was shut down temporarily to clear the debris but has been reopened and traffic has resumed as usual, Cathcart said.
