Hall suspect found dead in Newton

COVINGTON - A Hall County woman who was "a person of interest" in the suspicious death of a 7-week-old infant was found dead Thursday afternoon in Newton County, according to Newton County Sheriff's Office Lt. Bill Watterson.

Sue Ann Neidig, 33, was discovered about 2 p.m. at the home of friends in Newton County. Watterson said Neidig had arrived in Covington the day before her death to visit the friends, who were apparently her "surrogate grandparents." They found her body and notified the NCSO.

"Right now it does not appear to be foul play," Watterson said. "An autopsy was performed Friday, but the results are not back yet. We will wait for toxicology test results before a definite determination is made unless they saw something remarkable during the autopsy."

Watterson said the Hall County Sheriff's Office is in the process of eliminating all other avenues of suspicion in their case and are working to close it.

"She was their main person of interest," he said.

The investigation stemmed from the death of the infant Sunday afternoon. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner's office determined that the infant died from a brain injury, according to published reports by the Associated Press.

Watterson said he did not know the connection between Neidig and the baby's family, but she may have been regarded as a caregiver.
