COVINGTON - Even though end-of-the-year exams, high school graduation and the first day of college are many months away for Newton County senior students, officials at the high schools want the students and their parents thinking about those types of things now.
Officials at Alcovy and Eastside high schools are inviting parents of graduating seniors to a senior parent meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Eastside High School's auditorium, located at 10245 Eagle Drive in Covington. It's expected to last about an hour or more.
"Senior year is a stressful time for both students and parents," said Catherine Crisp, college and financial aid advisor for the two schools. "This meeting would be a great opportunity for parents to hear some valuable information that will help alleviate some of the stress parents and students are facing."
This meeting is the first of its kind for the schools.
"We always have senior seminars where we present this information during the school day to the students, but we are not sure how much of this information ultimately gets shared with their parents," Crisp said. "We are still going to have the daytime senior seminars for the students, but thought we would add the evening meeting so that parents would have the opportunity to hear the information first hand."
Senior students will participate in senior seminars during the school day at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at Eastside and at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday at Alcovy; both will be held in the schools' auditoriums.
At the parent meeting, counselors will present information to parents - and students if they wish to hear the information that will be duplicated in their school meetings - about senior evaluations, college applications, scholarship information, a college fair, workshops, military options, graduation requirements and various senior testing, among other topics.
School officials also will hand out scholarship information packets and "senior survival guides."
"The senior survival guide contains useful information about procedures at both AHS and EHS, as well as information about the ACT and SAT, college application planning, important dates for the year and plenty of other useful information," Crisp said. "There is no need (for parents to bring anything to the meeting), unless they would like to bring a pen and notebook to take some notes."
At the end of the meeting, parents will have time to ask questions.
Newton High School does not have a parent meeting scheduled.
