Newton Citizen
Although they were the first students at Newton County's newest school, the first day of school wasn't much different for South Salem Elementary School students than it was for countless others. Some were decidedly unhappy, as pre-K student Noah Freeman, top right, makes abundantly clear while paraprofessional Vanessa Drake tries to comfort him. Noah, who was assigned to teacher Laura Green, did eventually stop crying and join in the fun. Others, like Makayla Moore, bottom right, could barely contain the joy as she ran into Green's arms with an excited shout of glee, marking the beginning of her school career. She has a twin brother who was assigned to Katie Greenway's pre-K class. School officials reported some snags, but overall it was a good start to the school year.
