Newton's Knight wins 3,200 at region meet

COVINGTON - Newton's Travis Knight added the title of region champion after winning the boys 3,200-meter run during the final day of the Region 2-AAAAA track meet Wednesday at Lakewood Stadium.

Knight won with a time of 10 minutes, 31.68 seconds.

Of the 12 events in which Newton took part in Wednesday, six for the boys and six for the girls, Knight was the only person to advance to state.

Shay Marks had the best finish for the girls, coming in third in the 100, missing going to state by .3 seconds. Luella's Ciara Simms finished the run in 12.39 seconds with Marks posting a time of 12.69.

The girls 400 relay team had a fourth place finish with a time of 50.01.

Also scoring points for the Newton girls was Danielle Manning, who finished sixth in the 200, completing the event in 26.80 seconds.

The Lady Rams started the day in first place. By the time the final event was over, they had dropped to fourth place, finishing with 71 points. Luella won the region for the girls, compiling 108 points, followed by Redan (101) and Stephenson (92).

Scoring points for the Newton boys along with Knight were Yvens Joseph, Kegan Marks and Ladarren Hall.

Joseph finished in third place in the 800-meter run (2:01.97). Marks recorded a sixth-place finish in the 100 meters (11.26) and Hall also took sixth place in the 3,200 meters (11:02.87).

Stephenson won the region championship with 105 points followed by Redan (98), Douglass (93), Newton (51.5), Union Grove (48), M.L. King (45), Luella (42.5) and Lithonia (12).
