Rockdale Citizen Poll 4/19/2008

"This is to the young lady who walked in the March of Dimes walk this past Saturday ... Shame on you for littering! Throwing your water bottle down and not picking it up after several people made a comment about picking it up - you had the audacity to look back and smirk and then just continue walking. I wish that I had said something to Newton County's finest. You deserve a littering fine! Shame on you!"

----

"To the person who is crying about 'dead-beat daddies:' This does not apply to all ex-daddies. I pay my child support each month and then some. I always have more money and more time for my kids."

----

"This comment is for the mother crying that she never got any child support. You're the one that didn't take the time to file with Child Support Recovery. Believe me, child support laws do not benefit the father. Child Support Recovery is all about putting the screws to the father, even if they pay support as they should. How many mothers out there actually use the money they receive for the children? Not a one. Every one of you think that is your paycheck to get back at the father for your marriage not working out. Don't get me wrong, I certainly do not agree with deadbeat dads, because I have paid my support as I should and I think every non-custodial parent should. But the way the amount is figured is not fair. How can you base something on the amount before taxes and then make it hard for dads to have another family because of the leach ex. So quit crying that you didn't get any help. If you need hand-outs to get by, then don't have so many kids."

"If you drive on Highway 138/Ga. 20 and find you are stopping at every red light, it's likely the red light timing has become undone yet again. Rockdale County does not control the timing of the red lights. The state Department of Transportation does time these red lights. To report a timing problem simply call *DOT (*368) on your cell phone and report the problem."

"Never mind the waste in tax dollars bailing out the people dumb enough to give loans to non-fixed rate mortgages, I have zero tears for the home owners. If you were dumb enough to sign a loan for a non-fixed rate, you are getting exactly what you signed up for, and the fact that my taxes are going to get raised to bail you out, well gosh, if I wanted to live in a commie country, I would."

----

"There is a law that says that the person ordered must pay child support. And there are deadbeat moms out there also who don't take care of their kids."

----

"I think it's great that the city is concerned about making the Olde Town area more appealing by installing parks with benches, etc. But where are all the people coming from that they think will fill these parks? The top priority should be investing in the buildings and attracting more appealing retailers and businesses that are willing to stay open past 5 p.m. and on the weekends. Ever been in Olde Town on a regular weekend? It's a ghost town. It's time for a change - bring in businesses that will attract a better mix of people to boost the area. We certainly don't need any more lawyers' offices. We need more restaurants, more unique retailers and clothing stores, more bars ... Businesses that will draw people and keep them coming back! To get them here, it's up to the city to bring Olde Town out of last century and infuse it with some life. It's also up to the people of Conyers to realize the potential of Olde Town and let it emerge into a place people from other towns actually want to visit."

"The Heritage High School cafeteria sells cookies to children, but only in bundles of four. Now, if it's bad enough that we've got an obesity epidemic on our hands and kids living off fries, ranch dressing, Powerade, and cookies, isn't it stupendous that we're combating the forces of moderation with everything we've got?"

----

"To the person concerned about deadbeat dads ... Please advise your five children and their children never to lay down with deadbeats and they will not be faced with having to worry about child support! Why would you have five children with a deadbeat like this anyway! If you lay down with dogs, you are going to get up with fleas! Also, our Rockdale County judges are doing a great job of making sure justice prevails, and if you can't take the heat, then get out of the kitchen."

"To the family that moved in the subdivision off Hi-Roc Road, I would like to know why you moved there and who are you to be telling land/homeowner and taxpayer just like you, what they should do with their own property? It was very clear in your statement that the homes were in this state when you moved there; did you not see it then? If you did and it upset you, why did you buy a house there? I do not want to live across the street from a junkyard either, but I am not going to be telling someone else what to do with their own property. I do not live in a subdivision and I do not appreciate all the ones being built around me. I have lived here for 36 years and cannot wait until I am able to move from here, but maybe you should consider that the people that live there are less fortunate than you or are unable to clean up their property. Why don't you think about maybe helping them out instead of being ugly to them in the poll, if it bothers you that much. No one should ever be told what they can and cannot do with their own property."

"Hello. My comment is on the articles about the deadbeat dads and child support recovery. I would like to say that first, there are deadbeat moms out there, too. I am a single man who has raised two kids on my own here in Rockdale County, and Child Support Recovery has done the same thing, well has not done the same thing for me. I had to fight and go to Child Support Recovery day in and day out and try to get a dime out of my ex-wife. Don't just point out deadbeat dads, when there are a ton of deadbeat moms out there, too. I do agree that the child support recovery system is a joke."

"I am happy to see that work is being done to help alleviate the traffic problem at the intersection of Salem and Old Salem. I commented in the Citizen Poll several years ago about the ideocracy about the so-called turtles in the roadway, and fatuously referred to the traffic engineers as brilliant for placing them and/or filcher to remove them. I also suggested that attention be given to the intersections of Old Covington Road and Salem/Sigman and also the one at Sigman and Gees Mill. Turn lanes could be added at the Old Covington land intersection because of ample land availability. Additional lanes could be provided that can be incorporated into long-range plans for improvement at Gees Mill based upon the volume of cross traffic observed. There seems to be no rationale for a four-way stop which simply impedes the flow of traffic."

"To those who choose to tout the "single mom theory", you made a choice in your life. Back about 10 months before that all started, you made your bed. Bad choices are paid for, for many years, hooking up with a deadbeat was your plight. Live with it. Be creative. Use the system given to you. Don't complain about your mistake or mistakes. The single mother comment has become a pop culture victimism. You're no victim of your own acts. Responsible fathers do stand by their choices, but we also are paying for your mistakes in many ways. Grow up, your parent never told this, get a job, make due, better yourself and become a better parent. Your children will be much prouder of a parent that struggled and survived or succeeded, than the one who complained and played a victim mentality. Raise your children to not make your mistakes. We all have made mistakes, but the key is we made them, not everyone around us. Grow and take responsibility, quit making excuses for yourself. How is it that there are so many deadbeat dads, no acknowledged deadbeat mothers and we continue the cycle? Choose your partner carefully, respect the responsibility and for the sake of your children make it work "no matter what". We will all be better off when grandparents quit enabling their own children and raising their grandchildren. And if you're a father, raise responsible men, force them to adhere to your rules, if you allow your son to be a deadbeat you also are responsible and a failure. They should garnish your pay too. So there, someone should put a sign in my yard that says "This man pays every single month and has for 14 years". And no, the state does not make me."

"This probably won't be publicized. What about dead-beat fathers? I can see this getting news, but didn't anyone think about the reasons why a man can become a dead-beat father. What about the dead-beat mothers? Women who say they will help their husbands (before their divorces) after the children reach a certain age. In these days it takes two to work and get what is strived for. These women say these things, but when it is the time to really help the husband, who has been working 10-12 hours a day busting his behind off to help support his family, the women come up with all kinds of excuses, can't find a baby sitter (that's what nurseries are for, if you know how to balance your budget with both incomes coming in) being sick, problems with their backs (but able to go to the gym), knees, etc. There are desk jobs out there for these women, but they get lazy and don't want to help their husband, thus divorcing him and eventually he does become a dead-beat husband."

"Thank you to the people who leave shopping carts in parking lots. Twice in the last week I have left a store to find a shopping cart parked against my car. One was three parking spaces away from a cart return! If you're too lazy to walk your cart to a cart return, drive around until you find a parking spot next to a return or one closer to the store!"

"As a student in the marketing program at Rockdale Career Academy, I'm quite disappointed with the closure of our coffee shop, Common Grounds, during lunch. Due to one member of the Board of Education saying that Common Grounds is competing with the lunch room, (even though RCA is a charter school and is supposed to avoid this problem), we aren't allowed to be open during lunch and are restricted to opening only after school. We cannot afford to stock our shelves anymore because we have lost business and we are also losing a valuable education lesson and that is how to run a business. It is not only disappointing to me and my fellow marketing students, but also to the entire student body, the teachers, and the administrators. Something should be done about this, other than bureaucratic arguing. "

"Jimmy Carter is, indeed, a native son of Georgia for what that's worth. However, his presidency was certainly not very impressive as evidenced by the highest rate of inflation we have seen for decades. Be that as it may, how many more times is this senile old gentleman going to embarrass the United States with his trips abroad? As a former president, this activity has the implication that he speaks for our country. Nothing could be further from the truth. Time for Jimmy to go back to Plains and stay there and be quiet. Maybe not a local Conyers issue, but something worth consideration."

"At the speed these organ donor motorcycle riders go past my home on White Road, it's good to know plenty of organs will be available to me in the future. At that last second when you realize you aren't gonna make it because someone pulled out in front of you, just remember, your donation was appreciated! I've been riding a motorcycle for 45 years now and I've never seen such crazy riding as I do these days."
