'Horsepower' of a different color
Auto show kicks off today at horse park

CONYERS - The Georgia International Horse Park will play host to an entirely different kind of horsepower this weekend, when the 11th Annual Horsepower at the Park Auto/Truck & Cycle Show kicks off today.

Featuring judgings of hundreds of cars and trucks from a variety of categories, including antiques, muscle cars, imports, classics and stock, the show will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

According to event promoter Art Thoma, the show will be a great opportunity for collectors, car builders and enthusiasts to see local entries, as well as those ranging from as far away as South Florida to New Jersey.

He added that a show like "Horsepower" can be just as much fun for the participants as it is for the attendees.

"I'm a car builder myself," Thoma said, "and once you build a car up, you're proud of what you have put together. When you get the chance to show it off, you like to just stand back and watch people admire your car. It's like sharing a piece of artwork with the public; it's really in the same category."

An automotive midway will feature a plethora of new and used parts from approximately 100 vendors, as well as plenty of ideas for the avid tinkerers in attendance. Among this year's big additions to the midway, Thoma said, will be vendor Drag Specialty.

Other attractions include a motorcycle show featuring, vintage, classic and sport bikes, with plenty of motorcycle parts and vendors on hand. Special guest Brian Clock, a winner of the 2006 Discovery Channel Bike Build-Off, will also be in attendance, Thoma said.
