CONYERS - The Heritage boys golf team produced the best local finish in Monday's Heritage Invitational at Honey Creek Country Club.
The Patriots placed fifth with a team score of 343 - 38 strokes behind South Forsyth, which won the tournament at 304. Wesleyan was second at 319 followed by Habersham Central at 327 and North Forsyth at 333.
Salem posted a ninth-place finish with a 371, while Rockdale was 11th at 378. The Heritage B team finished 12th at 421.
Heritage freshman Harrison Elliot was the top local finisher in fifth place with a 4-over-par 76. Morgan County's Andrew Bryant was the medalist at even par 72.
"I wasn't very happy overall with our scores. Although Harrison played well shooting a 76, it's the first time other than the Conyers Cup that he's played well in tournament competition," Heritage coach David Buddenbaum said. "I think us having a week off (for spring break) had a little bit to do with it. I don't think we played enough golf over the break.
"But the course played very hard. It was cold, windy, rainy and there was sleet at one time, so the scores were up. It was very windy. The wind was probably blowing 25 mph the whole time."
Bennett Mitchell added an 86 for Heritage followed by Cameron Smith at 87 and Robby Kalland at 93.
Lane Keenan posted the lowest round for Salem with an 87. Sharvil Mehta was next at 93 followed by Stephen Jackson at 93 and Kyle Reagan at 100.
Rockdale's Josh Lambo was the second-highest local finisher in the event. He finished 24th with an 84.
Aaron Conyers (97), Tony Discordia (98) and Kyle Estes (99) completed the Bulldogs' scores.
The three Rockdale squads have five days left to prepare for the Region 8-AAAA tournament, which is set for Monday at the Innsbruck Golf Club in Helen.
