Letter - Self protection is a fundamental right

To the editor:

Each of us has a fundamental, inherent right to protect ourselves and our loved ones. No government can guarantee an individual's safety and protection 24/7. Our police, as good as they are, simply cannot be everywhere all of the time. And government does not have the right to deny me my right to protect myself and my family.

H.B. 89 seeks to allow law-abiding citizens the right to carry a concealed weapon, for purposes of self-protection, into more places than the current concealed carry law. These law-abiding citizens must agree to be finger-printed and undergo an extensive FBI background check before a carry permit is issued. We need Gov. Sonny Purdue to sign H.B. 89 and uphold our fundamental right to self-protection.
