Kindergarten Round-Up approaching

COVINGTON - Parents have until the end of the month before the Newton County School System's annual Kindergarten Round-Up is held.

Between April 28 and May 1, parents or guardians of children turning 5 years old by Sept. 1 can register their children for the 2008-09 school year.

Between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. April 28, school registration is open for students who are assigned to Middle Ridge, Palmer-Stone and Porterdale elementary schools at the respective schools. At the same time April 29, parents can go to East Newton, Rocky Plains and Oak Hill elementary schools. Fairview, Mansfield and Livingston families can attend registration April 30, and Heard-Mixon, Ficquett and West Newton on May 1.

"(Parents or guardians) will be completing the necessary paperwork," said Kenneth Proctor, elementary curriculum director for NCSS, about Kindergarten Round-Up. "While they are completing paperwork, school personnel will be conducting assessments for the children - hearing and vision, as well as a quick diagnostic assessment. For children coming from homes where English is not the primary language, a language assessment is also administered."

All new kindergarten students to the district need to be registered before they can attend classes. Parents of current NCSS prekindergarten students do not have to attend Round-Up day, unless they want to, Proctor said.

"Pre-K students will be registered by the Pre-K resource coordinators at their respective schools," he said.

Parents or court-ordered guardians are the only ones who can register their children for school.

They need to bring with them to registration day the child's Social Security card and certified birth certificate, as well as two medical forms: immunization record Form 3231 and hearing, vision and dental screening record Form 3300.

"If needed, hearing and vision screening testing will be available at the schools at the time of registration," according to a press release from NCSS.

Proctor said parents can submit up-to-date medical records up until the first day of school.

"We simply need all pertinent information before the beginning of the school year," he said.

On registration day, parents also must bring two proofs of residence: a garbage, electric, water or gas utility bill with the name and address of the registrant and a current lease, rental agreement or warranty deed from the purchase of a home.

"Should the child not live with one or both parents, guardianship or custody documents also will be required," the press release reads.

Proctor said wait time at registration tends to be "short," but parents can speed up the process by getting registration packets prior to the Round-Up day and have them completed on the registration day.

Those who cannot attend their scheduled Round-Up day or those families who later move into the county or another school zone can stop by the school to complete registration information and have the child's medical screenings completed when he or she starts school in August, Proctor said.

Once the school receives the required information, the child will be allowed to start kindergarten classes in Newton County's public schools.

Anyone with kindergarten registration questions should call the child's assigned school.
