Heritage squads top Rockdale

CONYERS - The Heritage tennis teams wrapped up regular season play with a pair of 5-0 victories over county rival Rockdale on Monday.

The Heritage and Rockdale squads will now turn their attention to the Region 8-AAAA Tournament, which begins Thursday at Madison County High School in Danielsville.

The Patriots and the Lady Patriots have both earned No. 1 seeds from the 8-AAAA South subregion for the tournament with perfect 10-0 records. The Rockdale boys will be the No. 2 seed from 8-AAAA South after posting an 8-2 record.

In the boys match, Heritage dropped only three games in singles competition. Jonathan Stone won 6-2, 6-0 over Sam Brotherton at No. 1, Zach Landy coasted 6-0, 6-0 over Jordan Jackson at No. 2 and Blake Craft cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Pathya Kunthy.

In doubles, Brad Hardin and Michael Knowlton posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory for Heritage over Jacob Kovac and Steven Rouk at No. 1. In the No. 2 doubles match, Heritage's J.J. Ramsey and Jacob Zirbel took the first set 6-1 and then held off Rockdale's David McCalley and Andrew Stover 6-4 in the second set to claim the victory.

"We were fortunate to get the match in today as cold as it was," Heritage boys coach Chuck Landy said. "But it worked out fine and I think it was good for both of us just to get out and play today. Now we've got a couple days of practice before we get to Thursday."

In the girls match, Heritage also dropped only three games in singles play.

Taylor Maloney beat MeQuilla Franklin 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Stephanie Humphries blanked Zuri Eshun 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Callie Alford defeated Sammy Girardot 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Heritage's Liz Forrester and Christine Harper prevailed 6-2, 6-1 over Mei Linn and Laura McCart at No. 1, while Keeli Smith and Amanda Voyles cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Ashley Jackson and Kathryn Johnson.

"It (the subregion title) is just one step along the way," Heritage girls coach Brian Smith said. "We've accomplished our goal of being the No. 1 seed, which gives us a bye on Thursday. Now we're looking to take our momentum from the regular season into the region tournament."
