8-AAAA soccer tourney ends tonight
Salem girls shooting for third region title

CONYERS - Four Rockdale County soccer teams will be in action tonight in the conclusion of the Area 8-AAAA Tournament.

Salem and Heritage have already qualified both of its soccer teams for the state playoffs, but only the Salem girls have a shot at winning the area and earning a No. 1 seed in the Class AAAA state tournament.

The Lady Seminoles, who are going for their third straight area title, play Loganville at 7:30 tonight at Reid Memorial Stadium.

Loganville knocked off Dacula 3-2 last Friday to advance to the finals, while Salem topped Heritage 3-0.

Salem and Loganville squared off earlier in the season in a game the Lady Seminoles prevailed 4-2.

"I think it's going to be a tough game. They have some real strong players," Salem girls coach Heather Richardson said. "It's the region championship and everybody has to step up their game."

Neither the Salem boys nor the Heritage boys will be playing for an area championship, but that doesn't mean the game between the two teams will be any less competitive.

After last week's losses, the Salem boys and the Heritage boys will play at 5:30 p.m. today at Reid for either a No. 3 or No. 4 seed in the state tournament.

Today's game is also the second straight year the two teams have played in the area tournament only weeks after facing each other at the end of the regular season.

Salem has won the last two regular season matchups, but Heritage won last year in the region playoffs.

"I'm sure Heritage will come out and give us a good fight. We did well last time against them, but that doesn't mean we'll do as well this time," Salem boys coach Sean DeWeese said. "It's a battle every time Salem and Heritage play each other. We're going to have to work hard to win."

Heritage boys coach Mike Beshiri said his team will also have to bring its "A' game.

"We've got to show up ready to play and play the best that we can," he said.

Meanwhile, the Heritage girls will travel up to Dacula to play for either a No. 3 or No. 4 seed at state.
