Rockdale Citizen Poll - 04/12/2008

This week's Citizen Poll was an open line ...

My comment today is a very big "thank you"! A few weeks ago I sent in a comment about the trash in the storm drain behind our county library. On my recent walk through, much to my surprise it was cleaned up. All the trash, tires, all were gone. To whoever was responsible for this, "thank you." And let's keep the library grounds looking great as they do now. Also, the Botanical Garden in Olde Town, as always, looks great. I know the city employees that keep it clean and the water looking good - to them it's just their job. But I say "thank you" for keeping this area looking as great as you do. Believe me, if Covington has such as this, I assure you it would not look as good as we have here in Conyers.

All you Heritage folks complaining in the last poll about the valedictorian should be ashamed of yourselves. If this was a sporting event, you'd be happy as clams to have a transfer student who excels at athletics, but you have the audacity to attack a young person who just happens to be smarter and younger than the other "players" for his/her success? You are beyond pathetic, and you need lessons on accepting defeat graciously.

----

Dear school administrators. Just because you can use the school's public address system to scream at and publicly humiliate your own children, doesn't mean you should.

----

All the road work in the world can't help traffic if the city of Conyers can't do a better job of coordinating traffic lights at the Ga. Highway 138/I-20 overpass. You really shouldn't have to stop at every light every day.

----

Regarding downtown parking: Someone made the statement that I was complaining about the parking, (wrong) I was merely stating what tax dollars and the law said. "Two-hour Parking." I'm a lifelong resident of Rockdale County and when there is a reason to voice my opinion, I do so. If you have been a merchant for "many years," you should be on the band wagon too. Oh, by the way, being "69" has nothing to do with breaking the law. (Millie).

Comment: I understand that cell phones are a part of almost every American's life and that text messaging has become very popular, but why is it that people feel the need to text as they drive down the road? People are even texting while driving on the interstate. I was almost hit by a woman text messaging while driving with her knees going down I-20 yesterday. As if we don't have enough traffic/accidents around here, let's add morons texting while driving.

You still did not answer my question. If I donate my paper to the schools when I go on vacation, A) where is the paper going and B) why am I not getting credit for it, when I'm told the schools do not receive the papers anymore? Who gets my paper and/or my credit it the schools aren't?

Editor's note: Some papers are being delivered to schools - although there are not enough donations from individual readers such as yourself to ensure that every child in every classroom gets a paper. We aren't sure what you mean by 'getting credit' for the donation. Logistically, we cannot ensure that your donated paper goes to your child or your child's school.

I was so happy to read what someone said about Judges Nation and Irwin and I have to agree! They are good men, wise, and a gift to our community. I thank God for men like them, who have served this community faithfully for so long.

I would like to know if anyone else is a bit concerned that the company that wants to purchase Rockdale Medical Center has had problems obtaining financing twice? If the hospital continues to have financial trouble, will Signature be able to afford to keep running the facility, and if not, who then? The Rockdale County (hospital) authority, who clearly are not qualified? Rockdale has some of the finest employees in the state working to care for its citizens, yet continues to lose money despite cutbacks that continue to this day. Changes have been made within the upper management area (CEO, COO, CFO) but, problems continue. ... Perhaps some serious reviews of director-level management personnel are needed. Also, if Signature ends up selling to a third party, will this third party have to maintain the same level of service (ie.. emergency, labor and delivery)? Somehow, I think the citizens are going to end up losing either way.

Comment: Just read the column by Ronda Rich ... don't know if I've just missed it before now or if this is the first time it's been on here ... but I absolutely love reading anything written by her. Ladies, do yourselves a favor and read her stuff. We ladies can always improve ourselves. :)

This is for the Citizen Poll. I have lived in Rockdale for 21 years and really love it here. Recently, my family moved to a subdivision off of Hi-Roc Road and I do have a complaint. Right across the street are houses/mobile homes that look like shacks about to fall in. The 'yards' are so full of wood, bottles, cans, broken toys, etc., that it looks like a landfill blew up. There's a house or two up the hill that also look like Fred Sanford's Junk Shop outside. Just because you live outside the city doesn't mean that you shouldn't take a little pride in your homes and yards. Please, clean up the eyesores.

This is to the reader who is so "enchanted with Judge Nation." ... media hounds like Judge "Alie" Nation are the ones creating a false representation of the justice system in Rockdale County. I think it's funny when the front page of the Rockdale Citizen ran a story not too long ago about Nation ordering a father to dig a grave. Why not make the man provide 120 hours of community service? Why, because that story would not put Nation on the front page of the Citizen. Everything that is wrong with Rockdale's legal system starts with judges, like Judge Nation, who take office and forget about the hardworking taxpaying families who put them in office. He has always been a power-hungry man. Do you think this judge should be sitting on the bench? Absolutely not! ... Taxpayers in Rockdale need a judge who recognizes and accepts the duty taken when sworn into office. I hope Mr. William Todd will decide to run.

I can't understand why, the 2007 graduation class consist of over 500 seniors and they are allowed only four graduation tickets. Whatever happened to friends and family? Some of these students have really worked hard to make it this far, only to find out some of their immediate family will not even be able to celebrate this day with them. Why not hold the ceremony some place that can accommodate parents, friends and family. The sad part is all of the money that has to be spent on cap and gown, etc. What a travesty!!

I would like to make a comment on dead-beat daddies. Someone had a comment, I think it was last month, on daddies who don't pay child-support in Rockdale County. Well, the system hasn't changed. It's in all counties. I raised five children and never got nothing. I tried everything. Believe me, dead-beat daddies have more rights with Child Support Service than the children do. My children are grown now. I have grand-children now that have to go through it now. So I can tell you mothers who are having to deal with this. It has not changed in the last 32 years. It's not going change now. It's like nobody cares about the children except for the mothers that have to cut corners in order to make ends meet with what they have. It's not right, but what can we do? You know if there was a law that made sure child-support was paid, there would not be so many mothers getting help from Department of Family and Children Services. You know, it is a shame. Children in other countries are helped, and don't get me wrong, I'm sure they need it. Have we forgotten the children that are here? I know how these mothers feel. I've been there. So try walking in a single mother's shoes. It's not easy.

I am writing in reference to recent administration and political party calls for a broader federal housing rescue. The latest plan from the democrats calls for restructured loans with mortgage lenders eating the losses. We all know that ultimately the cost for this program gets passed on to either the consumer or the taxpayer. We can't afford to travel anymore because our dollar is in the toilet worldwide because of irresponsible governmental fiscal management like these bailouts. Why should I pay for and try to help folks who knowingly entered into mortgages that they and their mortgage companies knew they could never really afford? Now, with these bailout proposals, the government is rewarding them for both their greed and ignorance at my (our) expense. What that means is that we'll be subsidizing someone who makes less than the average American, but is now occupying a home that was heretofore affordable only to the upper economic echelons. Why should I help to buy a home for somebody else, anyway? In essence, we're paying for that family to live well above their means. Additionally, many of these homeowners probably cannot afford to pay the taxes or maintain the home they occupy. So, not only are we subsidizing, but we're also fostering further falling home values and the development of future exclusive slums; just look around middle income housing in Conyers and you'll see it in your own "hood." Is there anyone out there that finds this a travesty besides me? If you just sit back and not voice your opinion to your legislators, they and the mortgage lobby will stick you and I with the bill.
