Police chase ends in crash into median

COVINGTON - A 22-year-old Rockdale County man allegedly led law enforcement officers from three agencies on a chase before he crashed into the median wall on Interstate 20 recently.

Nicholas Ryan Lynn, 22, of 1601 Marshall Lane, Conyers, was charged with driving with no headlights, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, and fleeing or attempting to elude, among other traffic violations.

According to the Covington Police Department, an officer attempted to pull Lynn over while he was driving in the city limits because the officer suspected he was driving under the influence. He reported that Lynn was refusing to stop and a Newton County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted his pick-up as he entered Interstate 20 westbound at the Covington exit 90 on-ramp.

"I then activated my emergency equipment and caught up to the vehicle," NCSO Deputy Wesley Atha said in an incident report. "The vehicle continued to travel westbound on Interstate 20 and I continued to follow it with my emergency equipment activated."

In the meantime, the Georgia State Patrol had been alerted that the truck was headed toward Conyers and a trooper was able to deploy a spike strips, designed to flatten tires and stop the vehicle, according to Investigator Sharron Stewart.

After running over the spikes, Lynn apparently lost control of his vehicle and struck the median wall just after the Salem Road exit.

Rockdale EMS came to the scene and transported Lynn to Rockdale Medical Center, where authorities say he was treated and released.
