Former UGA football coach to sign books

University of Georgia football fans have a chance to see a Bulldog legend this weekend.

Vince Dooley, UGA football coach from 1963 to 1988 and athletics director from 1979 to 2004, will sign copies of his books and other memorabilia from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday in the showroom at Phil Cook Motor Co., located at 1860 Eatonton Road/Ga. Highway 441 near Interstate 20 in Madison.

"We welcome all Dog fans to show up and see a legend; this is your chance to see him in this part of the world," said owner Phil Cook.

Dooley will bring with him pictures, posters, copies of his books and other Bulldog memorabilia, all of which can be purchased with cash or a check.

Event organizers prefer fans who attend the signing to have Dooley sign a previously purchased book or an item they purchase at the event. Guests also are permitted to take photographs.

Cook said Dooley has been to his showroom before - and even drives one of his cars and does radio promotions for the business - but has never held a book signing there.

"He's a friend and said anytime I wanted to do something to let him know, so I said, 'Well, it's time,'" Cook said.

In the past, Phil Cook Motor Co. has hosted former UGA football quarterback David Greene for an autograph signing in the showroom, and if Greene is a sign of how Dog fans will react to Dooley, Cook suggests getting up early Saturday morning.

"When David came, it started at 9 a.m., and when I got to work at 8 a.m., we already had people in the parking lot," Cook said.

He doesn't know how long fans will have to wait in line, but he said Dooley isn't expected to stay after noon to sign autographs.

"When he says he's leaving at noon, he's leaving at noon," Cook said. "And I know he's going to the Masters (Golf Tournament in Augusta) after this ... so he'll be out of here."

Cook said guests who are interested in purchasing any Phil Cook Motor Co. Chevrolet, Pontiac or GMC automobiles may get a discount Saturday.

"We always have specials," Cook said. "During special events like this, we'll make Dog fans special deals."
