ATHENS - The Heritage baseball team stayed perfect in Region 8-AAAA play with a 7-0 win over Cedar Shoals on Monday.
The Patriots (14-2 overall, 14-0 Region 8-AAAA) received strong pitching from starter Travis Tarleton, who allowed just two hits in five innings.
Tarleton also had six strikeouts and one walk. Steven Crawley and Kelvan Diaz combined to pitch the next two innings, allowing no hits.
"Our pitching was decent and we were sound defensively for the most part. We played well," Heritage coach Casey Teal said. "Still, I would have liked for us to put the game away when we had the chance. Offensively, we didn't crush the ball, but we were able to string together some timely hits."
Heritage scored three runs in the top of the first inning, one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to cap the scoring.
In the first, Tyler Austin and Tarleton both smacked singles and stole bases. Chunk Smith's RBI plated the first run of the game, while Ryan Jubran's groundout made it 2-0. The last run of the inning came of a sacrifice flyout by Anthony Bazzani.
In the third, Tarleton reached on an error, then stole second. Jubran's sacrifice fly moved him to third and Bazzani's second sacrifice fly RBI of the game brought him home.
Brock Holley was hit by a pitch in the fourth. After an Austin single, both runners scored on a fielding error on a ball hit by Tarleton.
Heritage's last two runs of the contest came in the fifth. Jubran singled then took second on an error. He reached home on an RBI single by Joseph Lester.
Due to cancellations, Heritage will have three more games this week, all to be played at home. The Patriots play host to Clarke Central at 5:30 p.m. today. Wednesday, they host Madison County, and Friday they host Alcovy.
