COVINGTON - The Covington Family YMCA is gearing up for its annual Cheerios Challenge5K/10K race and 1-mile fun run/walk.
Registration is now under way for the event, which takes place April 19. The Cheerios Challenge is both a celebration of national Healthy Kids Day and a fundraiser for the Partner With Youth program, which provides scholarships for families unable to afford YMCA services. "We decided to have a fitness-related activity to get young and old alike to come out to run and walk and be a part of this event," YMCA Senior Director Louly Hay-Kapp said. More than 750 people participated last year, Hay-Kapp said. In the past, participants have ranged in age from 2- to 82-years-old, she said. "It really does span the ages, for sure," she said. The race will begin and end at the YMCA on Newton Drive. The 10K race begins at 7:45 a.m., followed by the 1-mile fun run/walk at 9 a.m., and the 5K at 9:30 a.m. "This is a pretty easy route through downtown Covington," Hay-Kapp said. Registration runs through Friday. Registration fees are as follows: $15 for the 5K or 10K; $20 after April 11 or on race day; $12 for the 1-mile fun walk/run during early registration and $15 afterward. A family pack of four costs $45 during early registration and $60 after. A $100 cash prize will be given to the first male and female to break course records in the 5/10K. Registration forms can be downloaded at the YMCA's Web site at cvy.ymcaatlanta.org. For more information, call the YMCA at 770-787-3908.
