Bailey Creek Road to be realigned
SPLOST money to fund project

COVINGTON - Newton County is undertaking a realignment and widening of Bailey Creek Road, a major residential connector road between Newton and Rockdale counties.

Located in southwest Newton off Brown Bridge Road, Bailey Creek is narrow and curvy with limited sight distance, according to County Engineer Kevin Walter.

"For some time, the county has wanted to fix this," Walter said.

But the engineering and design of the project has been complicated by residences and utilities lining the road.

"We wanted to do it so as not to hurt the homes," he said.

A stretch of the road from Valley View Drive to a point about 0.1 miles into Rockdale County will be widened and moved slightly south by 15 feet to straighten out the curves, Walter said.

The project will be put out to bid in April and should be completed by the end of the year, he said.

"We're not going to close the road because there are too many residents that need access to homes," he said.

Walter estimated the project will cost $900,000, with funding from special purpose local option sales tax revenues. Rockdale County will reimburse Newton for work on its side of the line, Walter said.

County commissioners recently approved a $97,982.80 task order for transportation consultants PBS&J to do construction management for the project, inspecting construction work daily and making sure the county is only billed for materials that are needed.
