Rec Commission to hold day camp and turkey shoot

COVINGTON - The Newton County Recreation Commission is offering activities for kids this holiday season that parents will also enjoy.

On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the commission will host a turkey shoot at its headquarters at Turner Lake Park. But there's no need for alarm - the "shoot" won't involve shooting at all. Instead, kids will throw balls at a game board, similar to darts.

Kids will be divided into three age groups: ages 6-8, ages 9-10, and ages 11-12.

Participation is limited to 15 kids per age group.

Whoever scores the highest points in each age group will win a frozen turkey, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Debra Banks, the commission's new program coordinator, brought along the idea of the shoot from previous events she's hosted at other jobs, saying it's proven to be very successful.

"It gives the kids something to do and it helps the families. Even if it's not used for Thanksgiving, they've got a turkey in the freezer," Banks said.

The entry fee is $5 per child. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 13. To register, stop by the Recreation Commission office at 6185 Turner Lake Road in Covington,

or visit www.newtonrecreation.com.

The commission is also gearing up for its Christmas Break Day Camp, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Dec. 17-21 for kids ages 6-12.

Kids will participate in fitness class, nature hikes, arts and crafts - where they'll make Christmas gifts for their parents - and nature crafts, where they'll make bird feeders to hang on trees at the park, Banks said.

"We're expecting a visit from Santa on our last day," she added.

Activities will be geared toward different age groups, she said.

"It's an alternative to daycare. We're charging $65 per (child), but it's still cheaper than what day cares charge. ... It is a service to parents. Our job is to not only educate and entertain children in the ways of recreation and how to relax and ways to have fun, but to help the parents," she said.

The registration deadline for the camp is Nov. 30.
